Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season five may be the final season for the series.
It’s just a guess on my part, which is cemented in my mind by the recent fact that ABC wanted to cancel the series following last season, in addition to recent moves by Kevin Feige for the MCU, and also that the show has moved to a timeslot on Friday nights.
So despite ABC wanting to axe Agents of SHIELD, Perlmutter swooped in and saved the day, for potentially one last season.
Regarding why I think recent moves by Kevin Feige means Agents of SHIELD is getting cancelled–it also has to do with Ike Perlmutter.
Long story short, Perlmutter and Feige have been at odds over how to handle the movies, which led to the aforementioned split (Perlmutter has been blamed for Joss Whedon leaving Marvel, for issues with Robert Downey Jr. and no Iron Man 4, for issues with the Avengers cast salaries and more). Kevin Feige actually killed off SHIELD in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and never once has the MCU recognized anything that has ever happened in Marvel TV, despite claims of “it’s all connected” (it’s not). Samuel L. Jackson has also been absent from the Marvel movies, and the Marvel movies have never mentioned that Coulson is alive. Essentially, Kevin Feige has been ignoring anything that Perlmutter’s Marvel TV has done.
That all seems to be changing, and I think it’s because Marvel TV’s Agents of SHIELD has run its course. Samuel L. Jackson returns to the MCU with the 2019 release of Captain Marvel, and it has also been said SHIELD Agent Jimmy Woo will be appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp. I’m guessing Kevin Feige didn’t want his Marvel movies associated with Marvel TV, and there is good reasoning judging by reception to Inhumans, Iron Fist and even Defenders, as Feige didn’t want Marvel TV weighing down the Marvel Studios movies. I’m also guessing because of the feud, that Kevin Feige didn’t want to promote the Marvel TV series as well. So we apparently see now with Agents of SHIELD no longer being a part of Marvel TV following Season 5, that Kevin Feige is now again recognizing SHIELD in the MCU.
In all honesty, I’m not a fan of Perlmutter or Loeb as I despise what they have done to the comics and feel most of the Marvel TV stuff has been awful, but I did really enjoy last season of Agents of SHIELD with Ghost Rider, the LMD’s and the Framework, and do hope its success continues this season and on to subsequent seasons.
I’ve also made it no secret that Marvel would be better without the involvement of Perlmutter and his crew at Marvel TV and Comics, which includes Loeb, Joe Quesada, Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Brian Bendis, David Gabriel, Tom Brevoort, Axel Alonso and Stephen Wacker.
Marvel would be much better under one umbrella, united under Kevin Feige.
