With Marvel in shambles, some fans are hoping Robert Downey Jr. will be brought back to the MCU as Iron Man.
The actor was last seen in Avengers: Endgame when he saved the universe by bringing everyone back and snapping away the Great Titan, Thanos (who is also rumored to return).
Robert Downey Jr. started the MCU back in 2008, so fittingly enough, he ended the MCU back in 2019 as well (many fans and even a Marvel actor now refer to the MCU as the âM-She-U).
âIt would be up to them to figure outâ
While at the Sands: International Film Festival, Total Film caught up with the architects behind the death of Tony Stark, directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
Recently while speaking with Esquire, Robert Downey Jr. said he would be up for a return to the MCU: âHappily. Itâs too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. Heâs the house. He will always win.â
So what do the Russo brother think? Well, Anthony Russo laughed at the thought:
Anthony Russo explained why: âI donât know how they would do it. I donât know what the road to that would be [laughs].â
Joe Russo added he thought Robert Downey Jr. had a fitting end:
Meanwhile, his brother Joe added: âI mean we closed that book so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.â
How about via the Multiverse Saga?
Worth a mention is that Kevin Feige has been building some sort of Multiverse Saga, so Robert Downey Jr. could always return as a Variant, but that wouldnât be the MCUâs Iron Man (would it matter?).
Another possibility floating around is that RDJ could be the AI for Ironheart, thought to be the Iron Man replacement in the MCU, but again, that would be a shadow of Tonyâs former self.
Still another possibility?
Time travel but that opens up another whole can of warms as the rules presented in Avengers: Endgame and Loki seem to state that when time travel happens a Variant universe is created. Thereâs confusion, and this is comic book characters we are talking about, so if Feige really wants to bring back Robert Downey Jr., where there is a will there is a way.
