David Liss’ third installment, of the superb Mystery Men, continues to astound readers with a cacophony of action and intrigue!
Our troupe of normal players, the Operative, the Revenant and the newly dubbed Aviatrix, have been dropped into the backdrop in order to make way for two new Mystery Men to take center stage. But these two are unlike the others, one straddles the line between horror and hero, while the other becomes both stronger physically and emotionally after an encounter with the insidious General! We receive a harrowing look at just how far Nox will push her beast of burden, and the General must throw all vestiges of his humanity away to appease her.
Liss and Zircher have woven themselves quite a rich and engrossing world, one that parallels our own, and yet is ripe with the fantastic. Nothing is more enduring than hearkening back to the world of pulp heroes and being entranced by their tales. Liss sets the perfect tone of an era that was riddled with challenges, and yet now, has an aire of mysticism about it. But this issue really focuses upon how feeble men can be transformed into something both great and terrible in the blink of an eye. And just because a transformation has occurred that has empowered them beyond that of mere mortals, do their emotionally distraught minds evolve as well – or is a child at the reigns of a locomotive?

Visually stunning and mentally arousing, this is my pick of the week – every week!
