Review: Fear Itself #2 (of 7)

[page_title]

The Serpent has chosen those he has deemed "Worthy" — and the world will pay the price for knowing fear!

Book two of Fear Itself, though not as stunning as issue one, does exactly what a second chapter should — set up an insurmountable challenge laced with a cacophony of chaos! Devastation reigns supreme as heroes and villains alike are drawn to the siren song of the Serpent's weapons, one that will transform them both physically and mentally. We have already seen Sin transformed into Skadi, the herald of the Serpent, but issue two reveals four more that will dredge up fear from even the most stoic among us. Kuurth, Breaker of Stone; Nul, Breaker of Worlds; Skirn, Breaker of Men; and Nerkkod, Breaker of Oceans are bound to this mortal plane and nothing in the Marvel U. will ever be the same!

Fraction's decision to use the chapter header "Blitzkrieg U.S.A." was perfect for the extremely fast paced read he unveiled before us. From Yancy Street to Asgard, from Hulk to Absorbing Man, Fraction tried to encompass all aspects of the Marvel U., reigning chaos down on them all. With so much area to cover in a single issue, you would think the story would suffer dearly — but this is not the case here. Though not heavy on characterization, you are drawn into the overwhelming fear that weaves the tale together. Intertwining the Serpent's rousing battle speech with countless radio feeds of destruction across the planet, truly set the mood for a tale of dread and misery. It is done flawlessly, causing the reader to be enveloped within the confines of a situation that has dire consequences. Consequences that will tear asunder the very fabric of our heroes world and leave them broken in it's wake.

Just in time for the summer blockbusters to hit the theaters, Fraction brings one of his own. This book is for every fan that loves high octane, over the top action that leaves you gripping your seat. Yes, destruction and chaos rule this issue, but it also gives you a heavy dose of emotion. Fraction and team want to make the feeling of fear palpable and they execute it very well. So well in fact, that I have never read so much wavering doubt in Steve Rogers voice ever before. As he utters the single word "…Avengers?" – we can all feel his utter dismay and realize that this mini will leave lasting scars on the face of our Marvel heroes. Great job by all!
