While at one time he was this close to playing Superman, now Nicolas Cage offers up he wouldn’t mind playing the villain Lex Luthor.

The Guardian notes there has been an online campaign to get Nicolas Cage to play Superman, but the actor laughs at the notion.

“Oh, I think my Superman days are long gone,” he laughs with a little pat of his belly, the article notes.

The interviewer then recommends Lex.

“Oh, that would be GREAT! I’d make a great Lex Luthor!” Cage replied.

Who knows? With Henry Cavill possibly getting recast, maybe the DCEU will also need a new Lex?

Nicholas Cage

Regarding Nicolas Cage as Superman, the actor was once upon a time attached to the Tim Burton Superman Lives, which never saw the light of day, and would have also featured Kevin Spacey as the role of Lex Luthor, while Christopher Walken was the choice for Brainiac.

“I would offer that the movie that Tim and I would have made, in your imagination, is more powerful than any of the Superman movies,” Cage said when asked back in 2017 about his take on how Superman is being portrayed onscreen at the moment. “I didn’t even have to make the movie and we all know what that movie would have been in your imagination. That is the Superman. That is the movie. Even though you never saw it — it is the Superman.”

A while back also saw Nicolas Cage mention that he spoke to Christoper Reeve about Superman Lives.

“But when I was going to do Superman, I knew Christopher and we would talk – and he knew that I was going to somewhere else with it,” Cage said. “At that time, I would’ve been OK. I was going to have giant black, Samurai hair – and make him very different.”

While we didn’t get the chance to see him on the big screen, Nicolas Cage happened to voice the character in the recent Teen Titans Go! To The Movies animated movie.
