House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock is the new Supergirl for the DCU, as James Gunn has confirmed the article announcing the casting news by Deadline.

The site reports the 23-year-old Milly Alcock beat out both Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly for the role.

“This is accurate,” posted Gunn on Instagram. “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira.”

While it has been rumored and speculated Supergirl will first appear in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, Deadline reports that is not 100% certain, but the site does say she will appear in a DC-based project before starring in her solo movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

It’s also said Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow could start filming as early as this fall if a director is found in time.

Gunn also added on Threads, “In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

Mill Alcock also posted on Instagram, “So excited to be a part of the DC fam – thank you so much to @jamesgunn for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl.”

What is Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow about?

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow has Ana Nogueira is writing the script, but no release date has been announced as of yet or director.

The flick is officially described by DC as a “science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing.”

Variety also said in their earlier reporting that the films centers on “Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El and her superdog Krypto.”

James Gunn also said during last year’s big DCU press announcement held at the end of January: “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn during last year’s DCU press announcement. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Superman: Legacy gets released on July 11, 2025 starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.
