Mass Effect Series at Amazon Adds Doug Jung as Showrunner

Amazon MGM Studios has hired Doug Jung as the showrunner for its long-in-development Mass Effect TV series. Jung will collaborate with writer Dan Casey, who has been attached to the adaptation for nearly a year.

Based on the BioWare Franchise

Mass Effect, based on the popular video game series from BioWare and Electronic Arts, has been in active development at Amazon since 2021. The sci-fi franchise first launched in 2007 and follows Commander Shepard, a military officer tasked with stopping an ancient alien race from invading the galaxy. The franchise spans three mainline entries, a spinoff (Andromeda), and an upcoming fifth installment currently in development.

Production Team and Partners

Alongside Jung and Casey, the executive producers include Michael Gamble (Electronic Arts), Karim Zreik (Cedar Tree Productions), and Ari Arad and Emmy Yu (Arad Productions).

The series is being developed under Amazon MGM Studios’ ongoing deal with Cedar Tree Productions.

Doug Jung’s Experience

Jung brings experience from both TV and film. He was the executive producer and showrunner of The Chief of War, which premieres August 1 on Apple TV+. His past credits include Mindhunter (Netflix), Banshee (Cinemax), Big Love (HBO), and co-writing Star Trek Beyond for Paramount.

This appointment signals that Amazon is actively pushing Mass Effect forward, with a focus on translating the game’s world and narrative into a TV format. Deadline first reported on Jung as showrunner.

What’s next for Mass Effect?

The Mass Effect 5 video game is also in the works. Reports claim BioWare is pulling woke content from Mass Effect 5 following backlash in the gaming community.

BioWare’s next Mass Effect game is expected to pick up after the events of the original trilogy. Teasers suggest the return of Liara T’Soni and a narrative that may link Mass Effect 3 to Andromeda. The game is said to keep the series’ mature tone and detailed visuals, though an official release date has not been announced.
