If the Joaquin Phoenix Joker ever ran into Batman, it sounds like that version of the Clown Prince of Crime would be a big fan of The Dark Knight.
Joker 2 gets released next week and while promoting the release of the film, director Todd Phillips explained why his version would be awestruck by DC’s superhero.
“I think Arthur would be in awe of the alpha male that is Batman. I really do. I think Arthur would look up and appreciate it,” Phillips explained to IGN. “I think he’d be in awe of that.”
Phillips continued, “I think Arthur always had a fascination with men at ease, and he is not a man at ease. Murray Franklin in the first movie was a man at ease. He probably saw the guys he worked with as men at ease, and that was the one thing that Arthur could never be was a man at ease.”
Joker: Folie à Deux gets released on October 4 and also stars Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel, not exactly Harley Quinn.
“We respect the comics. We get the comics. In Harley’s case, we watched the animated series. Of course, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn. But when we run things through this film — Harvey Dent is a perfect example. It’s actually a simpler way of talking about what we did with Harley, which was really just put the real-world lens on it, and not that other movies didn’t, but just run it through our Gotham,” Phillips also told IGN.
