Jason Momoa Confirms He's Playing Comic-Accurate Lobo in Supergirl

Jason Momoa confirms he is filming the Supergirl movie in London and that the DCU’s Main Main is comic book accurate.

With James Gunn taking over DC, Gunn cast Momoa as Lobo in the DCU, which means that he won’t be playing Aquaman anymore, which was previously a part of the Zack Snyder DCEU.

Covered by white makeup

Update: Momoa further confirms how comic-accurate his Lobo is and says he’s covered by the white makeup all over. His publicist also stopped him from showing off a first look. Check out the video for more:

Filming Supergirl

While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote the upcoming release of the Minecraft movie, Jimmy made a point that Momoa is one of the few actors to play both a comic book hero and a villain.

“Finally. Finally. Finally,” Momoa said, as he recalled when Zack Snyder cast him that he first thought he was playing Lobo, who is his favorite comic book character. “I have every Lobo comic. He was my favorite.”

Momoa added, “I’m right now working on Supergirl.”

Comic accurate look

Regarding the look of Jason Momoa as Lobo in the DCU, an official first-look has yet to be released, but Momoa teased his look.

“Rides a motorcycle, smokes cigars, loves Guinness… I mean come on dreadlocks,” said Momoa.

While recently speaking with Screen Rant, Momoa also said, “I don’t want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I’ll say the bike’s really cool.”

How does Lobo fit with the Supergirl movie?

Plot details about Lobo in the movie are unknown, but interestingly enough, it is known that the comic book the movie is adapting originally had Lobo, but the DC Comics editors told the writer not to use him.

The Supergirl movie and comic is set in space, so since Lobo is an alien intergalactic bounty hunter, it’s not hard to connect the dots. Maybe Jason Momoa and Lobo will eventually make their way to Earth to take on David Corenswet’s Superman.

What is Supergirl about?

The film is in part adapting Tom King’s 2022 comic book, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely.

In the storyline, Ruthye Knoll, a young alien warrior, embarks on a galactic journey with Supergirl to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hills, the villain who killed her father. It’s also been said Krypto has a role who first appears in James Gunn’s Superman this summer.

“We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” said Gunn at the DC present event in 2023. “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Cast

Along with Jason Momoa as Lobo, starring includes Milly Alock as Supergirl, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura.

Release

Supergirl gets released on June 26, 2026. Craig Gillespie is the director; the script is by Ana Nogueira.
