James Gunn lets it be known that he will be developing and filming the Peacemaker series prior to returning to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Tuesday saw the big announcement from Gunn and HBO Max that John Cena will be starring in a Peacemaker series which will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming The Suicide Squad film.
Following the announcement, Gunn took to social media to field questions where he let it be known Peacemaker will be filmed before Guardians of the Galaxy 3, which still has no release date at Marvel.
“I’m doing Peacemaker in the time always allotted between The Suicide Squad & GotG Vol. 3,” tweeted Gunn. “Normally I would have been taking more of a break in this space but it’s Covid, I’m stuck at home, so I wrote a TV series.”

Fans excited for John Cena Peacemaker series
Since Cena is getting a Peacemaker series, a fan remarked that it must mean the character survives the movie.
“We’re holding off announcing the timeline of the Peacemaker TV show until after The Suicide Squad movie,” said Gunn.
The official announcement did make it sound as if the series is an origin, but per Gunn’s tweets, it seems as if it could be something else, possibly featuring flashbacks to the character’s origin or it could be a prequel — we’ll have to wait and see.
“‘Explore the origins’ does not necessarily mean prequel,” said Gunn.
Gunn also confirmed the HBO Max Peacemaker series will feature additional characters from The Suicide Squad.
“It will be done,” Gunn replied to a fan who questioned if other characters will be used and recommended Blackguard, played by Peter Davidson in the movie.
The Suicide Squad has an Aug. 6, 2021 release date.
