House of the Dragon has turned out to be a big disappointment, and now Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is chiming in admitting things are wrong with the show.
In a recent blog post, Martin didn’t specifically get into it, but he said he would at a later date.
“I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON… but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though. TODAY is Zozobra’s day, when we turn away from gloom,” wrote Martin.
What is wrong with House of the Dragon?
House of the Dragon Season 2 recently aired, but the eight episode season felt more like three or four episodes stretched out into the eight.
As I went over in my reviews, a majority of the season was people standing around talking and there was only part of an episode that featured cool action.
So what happened? As I wrote, it’s my guess the budget of the show has been severely slashed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. It’s no secret Warner Bros. Discovery is in financial peril, and it’s been something I have been told for the past couple of years.
This seems to be backed up by what the showrunner said following the disappointing season finale (note: bold my own).
“As a showrunner you are always in a position of having to balance storytelling and resources you have available to tell that story,” said Ryan Condal. “We are also starting to think about, what is the final destination of this series and where are we going? A combination of factors led to that re-balance. There is a tremendous amount of resources, construction, armor, costumes and visual affects needed to give the Gullet, which is arguably the second most anticipated action even to Fire and Blood, the time and the space it deserved. We are building to that event. It will happen very shortly in terms of storytelling. It will be the biggest thing to date we have pulled off. We want to have the time and space to do that at a level that will excite the fans.”
