A new Game of Thrones movie is reportedly in the early stages of development at Warner Bros., according to the trades.
The project would extend the wildly popular fantasy franchise originally based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. Although Warner Bros. has declined to comment, the trades say that discussions are in very preliminary stages and the project has been quietly in development; no creative teams or directors have yet been attached to the project.
It’s known that originally the creators behind the series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, wanted to end things with a three-part movie. However, WB was owned by AT&T at the time who reportedly turned that down and wanted the series over ASAP, hence the shortened final season and possibly why things fell a part at the end.
The HBO series Game of Thrones concluded in 2019 after eight seasons, achieving record-breaking viewership and collecting 59 Emmy Awards.
Game of Thrones starred Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled princess with a claim to the throne, and Kit Harington as Jon Snow, a member of the Night’s Watch with mysterious origins. Lena Headey played the ruthless Queen Cersei Lannister, with Peter Dinklage as her clever but underestimated brother Tyrion Lannister, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Cersei’s conflicted brother and knight. Other key stars included Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, and Sean Bean as Eddard Stark, whose family’s fate drives much of the story.
WB currently has the Game of Thrones spinoff prequel, House of the Dragon Season 1 and 2 on HBO and MAC, and the new spinoff is in the works with, A Knight Of Seven Kingdoms.
