When you think of Captain Marvel Carol Danvers, do you also think of Green Lantern?
I never have, but maybe that’s because I can distinguish the two. More than likely the blame lies with the same audience that Tom Hiddleston recently revealed caused Loki to be cut from The Avengers 2.
Captain Marvel co-writer Nicole Perlman, who also wrote an early script for Guardians of the Galxy, stated on the Any Time With Vin Forte podcast that they are reinventing Carol Danver’s origin story for the Captain Marvel movie.
“She’s obviously such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently,” Perlman said. “But here’s the thing: if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen.”
Perlman is writing Captain Marvel with Meg LeFauve and says it’s been a blast so far.
“It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film,” she said.
Regarding the similarities between Captain Marvel and Green Lantern, both are in the Air Force and receive their powers from aliens.
I’ll throw this out there: Perhaps they are changing up Captain Marvel’s origin story because they may feel it’s too similar to Richard Rider Nova’s origin as he, too, received his powers from an alien. Nova is already rumored for Marvel Phase 4, maybe Marvel wants to give Nova the alien origin instead of Captain Marvel? We can hope.
“Captain Marvel” has a March 8, 2019 release starring Brie Larson.
