Good or bad, you can blame Kevin Smith for the goofy and comedic approach to Thor: Ragnarok.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth reveals that after hearing Kevin Smith bashing Thor on a podcast that it inspired him to approach head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige.
Hemsworth credits Kevin Smith, whom he once heard bashing the Thor franchise on a podcast, for inspiring him to speak his mind to Feige. “Hearing someone like Smith, who represents the fanboy world, was such a kick in the ass to change gears,” Hemsworth says. “We sort of had nothing to lose. People didn’t expect what we did with it this time around.”
The interview also reveals it was Chris Hemsworth’s idea to cut Thor’s hair and also that director Taikia Waititi had become “sick” of old Thor, and “wholeheartedly endorsed” the new approach.
It was Hemsworth idea to “cut his hair” and “destroy the hammer”—moves that Waititi, whom Hemsworth describes as also being “sick” of old Thor, wholeheartedly endorsed.
My own two cents is that I would take whatever Kevin Smith says with a grain of salt. After all, Kevin Smith gushed about Star Wars: The Phanom Menance. ‘Nuff said?
