New details are learned about Matt Reeve’s involvement in the new Batman movie, as Reeves talked about the flick while promoting War for the Planet of the Apes.
Matt Reeves tells MTV, which seems to corroborate an earlier rumor, that he is starting Batman over, which means a new script.
It’s a new story. We’re starting again. I’m excited about it. It’s going to be really cool.
It’s pointed out that Josh Gad wants to play Penguin, but Matt Reeves says they haven’t talked to anyone about casting.
No. No. No, because the whole thing is just.. Look. Truly, I have not been doing anything, but working on Planet of the Apes.
Matt Reeves also talks about how he got the deal to direct Batman in that his agent told him WB wanted to take a general meeting with him. Reeves thought the meeting could be pushed back after War for the Planet of the Apes, but then his manager told him it’s for Batman, and also that WB wanted the meeting ASAP. Reeves told WB that he wasn’t going to drop the ball on War for the Planet of the Apes because he has been working on the movie for three years. Reeves also told WB he wants a break before he starts on Batman, which may mean production will start some time in 2018.
I am going to need a short break because I’ve been working on this movie for three years.
A while back Matt Reeves was also a part of a list to direct a new Superman movie, but Reeves says it wasn’t true.
Never met with Warner Bros. about Superman.
So we learn from Matt Reeves that he hasn’t started working on the Batman movie, hasn’t talked with anyone (other than Ben Affleck) about casting, wants a break before he starts work on Batman, and also that he is scrapping the Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck script which featured Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke (Manganiello recently said he is unsure if he is a part of Matt Reeves’ Batman movie).
With Matt Reeves likely not starting on Batman any time soon, it’s looking more than likely that Batman will have a 2019 release date. It’s possible WB could announce further details next week at Comic-Con at their Justice League movie and Aquaman panel.
War for the Planet of the Apes is now in theaters.
