Guardians of the Galaxy Gets A Screenplay Writers Guild Nomination

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18650:]]

Good news for James Gunn and Nicole Perlman as the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy has earned a Writers Guild Nomination Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Writer Guild Awards also credits Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning whose 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book inspired both Gunn and Perlman:

Guardians of the Galaxy, Written by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman; Based on the Marvel comic by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning; Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Other nominees included in the category are: American SniperGone GirlThe Imitation Game and Wild.

Gunn posted the following response to the news on his Facebook:

So today I woke up to discover I was nominated, along with Nicole Perlman, for a Writer’s Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m honored and surprised by this, especially because we were the only film, of all ten films nominated for writing awards, that did not send a screener to Guild members, and did not spend money on any kind of push. Pretty damn cool. I know some of my fellow Writers’ Guild members follow me here, so thanks!

I also want to send out hearty congratulations to Charles Wood, our production designer, who was nominated for an Art Directors’ Guild Award for Excellence in Production Design, and Alexandra Byrne, our costume designer, who was nominated for a Costume Designer Guild Award for Excellence in a Fantasy Film. Charlie and Alex are two of my most talented GotG partners and couldn’t be more deserving of these nominations (and, truly, the awards themselves).

The winners of the Writers Guild Awards will be announced February 14th.

James Gunn is writing Guardians of the Galaxy 2 set for a May 5, 2017 release date. Nicole Perlman is writing the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora prequel comic book for Marvel Comics. Dan Abnett is writing Guardians 3000 for Marvel, and Andy Lanning continues to write comics for various publishers.

Viola Davis Confirms Amanda Waller For Suicide Squad Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18394:]]

Confirming an earlier rumor, Viola Davis recently spoke about playing Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

Viola Davis recently did some press for Blackhat where she was asked about Suicide Squad.

“Not yet,” Davis replied to Nerd Report when asked if she had started to read the Suicide Squad comic books. “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad.

“I’m fascinated by her,” Davids continued. “I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

In the comics, Amanda Waller is the government liaison in charge of the Suicide Squad, which is a group of villains coerced into working as a team.

Viola Davis joins Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtey as playing Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Jesse Eisenberg is rumored to follow his Batman vs. Superman debut as Lex Luthor.

Suicide Squad has an August 6, 2015 release directed by David Ayer.

The Avengers 2 Footage Screens At CES

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18634:]]

In addition to The Avengers 2 promo pieces showing up at the Consumers Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Marvel Studios showed off some new footage from the movie.

According to IGN, the featurette focused on Ultron and used scenes from The Avengers 2 trailer along with comments from director Joss Whedon and some of the actors talking about the importance of Ultron as a villain.

New footage was shown including a shot of the Ultron drones bursting through walls of a train in the slow-mo Quicksilver sequence from The Avengers 2 trailer.

Another new scene took place during the villa sequence where Iron Man flies at the camera leaving Ultron drones in his wake.

A third scene showed the destruction of a Samsung building.

The featurette also showed off more Ultron concept art including Ultron in its “broken” state, and it’s said the piece suggests how advanced Ultron really gets in the movie.

Comments from Joss Whedon are said to include that that whenever he thought of the Avengers, he pictured them fighting Ultron

Whedon also stated he was responsible for getting James Spader to play Ultron as that is who he wanted for the role.

“The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” hits May 1, 2015 directed by Joss Whedon starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. James Gunn Couldn’t Use Rom, Bug Or The Badoon In Guardians of the Galaxy

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18628:]]

Fans of the Abnett and Lanning Guardians of the Galaxy comic book would have loved to have seen Bug in the movie, and fans of the original characters would have loved to have seen The Badoon.

Another fan-favorite character is Rom The Spaceknight.

It turns out the three may have had a chance of appearing in the movie if only Marvel held the film rights to the characters.

Rom The Spaceknight is owned by Hasbro as is Bug, as Bug is first considered a member of the Micronauts.

The Badoon are owned by Fox as the Badoon first appeared in Silver Surfer, which Fox Studios owns the film rights to as well.

James Gunn recently spoke about the characters with Geek Nation:

There’s characters that I’ve been interested in that I’m not allowed to use but I won’t go so far as to say I definitely would have had them. There was a really good chance Bug was going to show up in the first movie but we do not own him… but, anyway, that was going to happen, perhaps. Listen, I really love Rom: Spaceknight, as everyone at Marvel knows because they’ve given me Rom stuff… but we don’t own Rom. I would love for Rom: Spaceknight to show up because I love his story, I love the way he looks, I love everything about him… There are other characters, but basically, some characters we can work around and we can use. Listen, I wanted to use the Badoon, but the Badoon we don’t own… they’re really interesting. They would be like the cannon fodder guys who were like the Sakaaran in my movie… I wrote them as Badoon but I just did a search-replace-Sakaaran when I found out we didn’t have Badoon. It was strangely late in the process when I found that out. They were designed as Badoon.

IDW Aquires Top Cow

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18624:]]

IDW released information stating they have acquired Top Cow Productions.

IDW Publishing Acquires Top Shelf Productions

Two Industry Leaders Combine Forces

San Diego, CA (January 6, 2015) – Leading comic book and graphic novel publisher IDW Publishing announced today that it has acquired Top Shelf Productions, the award-winning independent publisher of graphic novels, including the #1 New York Times and Washington Post bestseller March by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (with Kevin O’Neill) and From Hell (with Eddie Campbell), Craig Thompson’s Blankets,Nate Powell’s Swallow Me Whole, and Jeff Lemire’s Essex County.

“The acquisition of Top Shelf is a milestone for IDW,” said Ted Adams, IDW CEO and publisher. “We looked a very long time for a company that would complement our own publishing line-up, and in Top Shelf we found the ideal match. The addition of Top Shelf’s library further positions IDW’s leadership role among the top powerhouses in comics.”

Top Shelf will remain a distinct imprint within IDW and co-founderChris Staros will join the company as Editor-in-Chief, Top Shelf Productions. Top Shelf’s fans can expect the same independent editorial approach that has garnered industry-wide awards and made it an envy among its peers.

“IDW is committed to preserving and growing the Top Shelf brand, which we’ve long admired” said IDW president and COO Greg Goldstein. “Chris and his team have built a great working relationship with creators, fans, and retailers alike, and IDW will work diligently to expand Top Shelf’s publishing capabilities and market reach while further developing those relationships.”

Founded in 1997, Top Shelf Productions offers a broad library of comic books and graphic novels from dozens of the industry’s top independent creators. Following the acquisition, Top Shelf’s headquarters will remain in Marietta, GA.

“Top Shelf and IDW complement each other perfectly,” said Top Shelf Productions co-founder and publisher Chris Staros. “We both started around the same time, and when I would watch IDW over the years, as a fellow publisher, I’d see them making smart move after smart move. Now I’m extremely excited to combine their talents and resources with Top Shelf’s award-winning literary approach to comics. And believe it or not, the idea to join forces hit us both at exactly the same time. Last year, as I was about to pitch Ted and Greg this ‘crazy’ idea, they approached me to suggest the same thing! How’s that for a good omen? Together, we’re going to be able to publish some incredible work. I’m really looking forward to this.”

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

FAQs

Will Top Shelf retain its own brand identity?
Absolutely. It will remain a distinct imprint within the IDW family of books.

How will IDW Publishing’s new ownership role directly impact Top Shelf?
IDW’s main role will be the support and management of Top Shelf’s infrastructure — production, sales, marketing and promotional initiatives. IDW will also provide additional funding to secure new breakout projects so that Top Shelf can direct their full attention to producing fan-favorite award-winning books.

IDW will use its 15 years of publishing experience to further enhance Top Shelf’s incredible line-up and ensure that the backlist is always available to an expanded retailer and consumer base.

What role will Chris Staros have going forward at Top Shelf?
Chris Staros will join the company as Editor-in-Chief of Top Shelf Productions and will expand his role as one of the most innovative editors, marketers and new talent scouts in the industry. Therefore, Top Shelf’s fans can expect the same independent editorial approach that has yielded first-rate books and garnered industry-wide awards.

What about the rest of The Top Shelf staff?
While Chris’ long-time friend and business partner, Brett Warnock, has decided to retire from the world of comics and explore business opportunities through his newly launched food and nature blog, the rest of the Top Shelf staff will remain in place to continue Top Shelf’s indy-focused operations: Leigh Waltonas Top Shelf’s Publicist & Marketing Director; Chris Ross as Lead Designer & Digital Director; and Zac Boone as Warehouse Manager.

How does this acquisition affect Top Shelf’s independent creators?
Top Shelf publishing agreements will be honored in full, with all creator rights and deal points continuing as they are currently written. IDW will also be able to ensure that Top Shelf’s extensive catalog stays in print, and all creators receive royalties on the solid schedule IDW is known for.

How will this transition affect retailers?
We anticipate a very smooth transition, as both IDW and Top Shelf use Diamond Comic Distributors and Diamond Book Distributors as their exclusive distribution partners for both the comic book specialty market and book market. The entire Top Shelf inventory is already being warehoused by Diamond in the same location as the IDW inventory.

How did the transaction come about?
IDW has been interested in pursuing an acquisition(s) for some time and earlier in 2014 retained industry veteran Bill Schanes (former VP of purchasing for Diamond) as a consultant to thoroughly investigate acquisition opportunities. Top Shelf, as it turned out, was by far the best of these and Bill facilitated the “matchmaking” early on. Once the companies got to know each other better, the rest was, as they say, history.
