Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return for a third season. The series is now in pre-production and will begin filming this spring at its new home, Shepperton Studios in the UK.
New and Returning Directors Announced
Three directors have been confirmed for Season 3. Charlotte Brändström, who directed episodes in Seasons 1 and 2, will return as executive producer and director. Sanaa Hamri, who directed multiple episodes in Season 2, is also back. Stefan Schwartz joins the series as a first-time director for the show. Each will oversee multiple episodes.
Brändström has worked on Shōgun , The Witcher, The Outsider, and The Man in the High Castle. Hamri has directed The Wheel of Time, Empire, and Prime Video’s The Bondsman. Schwartz’s credits include The Boys, The Walking Dead, and Luther.

One of Prime Video’s biggest hits
According to the press release, Rings of Power remains one of Prime Video’s biggest hits, with over 170 million viewers worldwide. Season One remains the biggest TV premiere in the history of Prime Video and Season Two is the most-watched returning season by hours watched. The show is also said to have played a key role in boosting Prime membership sign-ups. The announcement adds that critics have praised its large-scale production, and both previous seasons hold “Certified Fresh” ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
Production Team and Showrunners
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay continue as showrunners and executive producers. Other key figures include Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, and Kate Hazell. Matthew Penry-Davey serves as producer, with Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee as co-producers.
With Season 3 officially in motion, The Rings of Power will continue expanding its take on the history of Middle-earth.
