A deal is in the works for a Harry Potter series at HBO, which if everything goes through, will consist of seven seasons that adapt the seven books by JK Rowling.
According to Bloomberg, Warner Bros. Discovery is close to a deal but creator JK Rowling hasn’t signed on board just yet.
Update: Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the series.
It’s hoped the new Harry Potter series will be a part of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and HBO’s new streaming strategy which will be announced next week.
Zaslav has also said he wants to concentrate on putting out more high-quality entertainment, which includes the recent announcement about new Lord of the Rings movies, more Game of Thrones and The Last Of Us are on the way, and James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the DC Universe with new versions of Batman, Superman, and more.
Assuming JK Rowling will eventually give her blessing, it’s said that each season of the HBO Harry Potter series will adapt a single book, so as some of the books are more than 500 pages in length, the HBO series will go further into the story than the movies did.
Speaking of the movies, obviously, since the HBO series will be adapting the books from the start, that means new castings for Harry Potter, Dumbledore, Ron, Hermione, etc.
It’s also said that JK Rowling is expected to join the series as a producer where worth a mention is that Rowling has complete creative control.
New Harry Potter projects rumored for a while
New Harry Potter projects have actually been rumored for a while as back in 2016 and again in 2019 it was rumored Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint would be back for another movie.
The rumor claimed a new movie would adapt the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway play which begins nineteen years after the events of Deathly Hallows and follows Harry, now Head of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, and his younger son Albus Severus Potter, who is about to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
A Harry Potter HBO Max series was also reported to be in development a couple of years ago but reps for WB and HBO Max denied it at the time.
It’s at least probably safe to say there has been talk of doing additional live-action Harry Potter projects due to the IPs insane popularity, which includes selling 600 million copies of the books, the movies making billions, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Universal Studios Hollywood, and the Hogwarts Legacy game is the biggest global launch ever for WB Games.
