Details for the movie include that the Joker origin movie centers around the iconic arch nemesis of Batman and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. The film follows the transformatation of a struggling stand-up comedian to a full-blown criminal force of nature.
The movie started filming this month and stars Robert DeNiro as a talk show host; with Deadpool 2’s Zazie Beetz playing a single mom who catches the interest of the man who will become the clown prince of crime; Marc Maron is the agent responsible for getting the Joker on DeNiro’s talk show, with the film also starring Frances Conroy and Josh Pais.
“I think [Todd Phillips is] very impressive, and he seems to have a very interesting understanding of this world and what he’s trying to say,” Joaquin Phoenix previously revealed when he explained why he decided to take on the role. “And so there is something very appealing about that and working with him on this particular project. It feels unique, it is its own world in some ways, and maybe, mostly, it scares the f-cking sh-t out of me or something. It might as well be the thing that scares you the most.”
It has also been revealed that Joaquin Phoenix has lost substantial weight for the role.
Joker has an October 4, 2019 release date. (note image above is fan art)
