This past Comic-Con saw Geoff Johns offer that the Green Lantern Corps movie will be a complete re-imagining featuring both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and now he offers further details including that it won’t be similar to the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Collider comments that Marvel had success with its space movies with Guardians of the Galaxy and that it could open the door for Green Lantern to show some cool stuff, which saw Geoff Johns offer that he both agrees and doesn’t agree, but he couldn’t go into much for fear of spoiling things.
“I agree in both a similar way and a very different way, too, because you can’t be just ‘it’s DC’s Guardians of the Galaxy,'” Johns said. “…Because James Gunn did such a great job on that, but you got to look at it like… I don’t want to get into it, either.
Geoff Johns did discuss rebooting the characer following the 2011 Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie.
“I think you look at everything – this is when I do comics, too – you look at everything that worked and didn’t work, on anything,” Johns said. “Like revamping a character, reintroducing a character, I’ve done it a lot. The creative kind of viewpoint and way into the character and rebooting and changing it and reintroducing it, is informed by everything. It’s informed by comics and both what works and what doesn’t work. I don’t wanna spoil any of the story there, but if people liked my run on Green Lantern, then hopefully they’ll like what I’m doing.”
Johns also has some opinions on the Green Lantern movie, as he is asked about how they will be doing the suits in Green Lantern Corps, but again, he doesn’t want to go into specifics (which sounds like Johns didn’t like the approach).
“I look at what they did with those suits. Look, I have so many opinions that I won’t say,” Johns said in regards to the 2011 Green Lantern movie. “…That’s such a down the line converastion about director and costume designer… You think about it, but when I’m writing the story, I am not worried about the practicality yet of the suit. In my head, a tangible suit is cooler, an enhanced tangible suit is better. But it’s really going to be about where we are in the director and everything else, and that’s a question, we get a great script, and we get a great director, and they want to make the movie and then [we’ll see].”
Geoff Johns also revealed that he is currently writing the Green Lantern Corps movie and that they have to get it right to move forward.
“And right now, look, I’m just writing a script, and hopefully this script gets into a place where Warner Bros., and DC, Walter [Hamada] and everybody — [once] they’re really excited about it, when we get that right, then we’ll move ahead on the project,” Johns said. “But we gotta get it right.”
Geoff Johns also offers up that he can’t totally start from scratch as Green Lantern has a history in various media.
“I’m taking everything into account. That’s what you do. You are not starting from ground zero and going ‘I’m going to tell a story about this.’ It’s connected to everything, animation and comics and zeitgeist and other movies,” Johns said. “There is a lot to take in and then redirect, and I am trying to do what I did on the comics in a way, do a rebirth.”
Finally, Geoff Johns says that he is really happy to return to his role as being a writer, where he has more control.
“What do you do to try and reintroduce a concept and a group of characters and make it – this applies to everything I work on – but as a writer, and that’s what I really wanted to get back to, is being the writer, when I do my comics I feel I have more control over the minutae, because the minutae it does matter. All those little choices add up to something good or something that doesn’t work. Part of the reason I want to get back into the writing of it all is because I want to form that minutia myself.”
