Han Solo Losing Over $50 Million

Han Solo Losing Over $50 Million

More bad news follows Disney’s Han Solo movie as it’s estimated the film will take a loss, the first time ever for a Star Wars movie.

With Han Solo tanking this past weekend bringing in less than $30 million, and with its current box office gross at $264 million, it’s estimated the finished worldwide haul will only be around $400 million.

If the number holds up, that means Han Solo will lose somewhere around $50 million or possibly as high as $80 million or more.

The budget of Han Solo was at least $250 million, so with marketing and other expenses added in, the $400 million doesn’t look to nearly be enough to make a profit.

The low box office performance is in contrast to the previous Disney Star Wars movies as The Force Awakens earned $2.068 billion, Rogue One brought in $1.056 billion, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi grossed $1.332 billion.

Reasons suggested for the failure of Han Solo include the popularity of The Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, the huge disappointment of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the production issue surrounding the film, but a Wall St. exec scoffs at those excuses and points to Disney’s marketing as the reason to blame

“Disney’s marketing department, in our opinion, had one job: sell audiences on Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo… Disney needed to sell Ehrenreich as Solo, but didn’t.” Veteran media analyst at Cowen, Doug Creutz, said in a report. “In general, we felt like the Solo marketing campaign didn’t get fully up to speed until about a month before the movie came out, and that is simply too short of a window for a big franchise picture.”

Han Solo box office:

Domestic:   $148,989,574
Foreign:      $115,397,526
Worldwide: $264,387,100
