Disney’s poor performance for Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues at the box office as it’s learned that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle actually surpasses it on New Year’s Day.
The Last Jedi‘s New Year’s Day total is also well short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($34.4 million) and even short of Star Wars: Rogue One ($16.7 million).
To date, Jumanji has a $185.7 million domestic box office, with another $153 million in foreign receipts for a current worldwide box office gross of $338,755,967.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still a big success for Disney (simply because it’s Star Wars) and has passed the billion dollar mark at the box office, but it looks to finish a lot short of J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens mammoth 2 billion dollar box office gross.
Regarding why Star Wars: The Last Jedi isn’t doing well, it’s thought to be attributed to the disappointing storyline surrounding Luke Skywalker, which following Mark Hamill having only been teased at the end of The Force Awakens, was a hugely anticipated return for the character and for the fans, but Hamill’s return was less than stellar as the actor himself even noted.
Abrams is returning for Star Wars: Episode IX.
