Sony has acquired the rights to the Robotech franchise with 300 producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton on board.
300 and G.I. Joe writer Michael Gordon is writing the new movie.
“With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless,” Michael De Luca, Sony production president, said in a statement.
Robotech first appeared in the U.S. in 1985 after being adapted from Japanese anime.
The series saw alien tech discovered in the South Pacific which enabled mankind to create mechs to fight off alien invasions.
