At one time planned to be a spinoff movie, now it is rumored the Obi-Wan Kenobi project will be a series for the Disney Plus streaming service.
The rumor has it that the initial plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi were for the movie to start filming after the debut of Han Solo, which is why Ewan McGregor attended the premiere, but following the disappointing box office, things changed at Disney (and we can probably thank The Last Jedi, too) which includes placing the movies on hold.
The Star Wars fan site SWNN has it that Obi-Wan is the next top priority and will be a limited TV series happening on the Disney Plus streaming service featuring possibly as many as six episodes. According to the site, the movie script was “great,” so the series looks to be just as good, with the bonus being more content will be featured in a TV series than a 2-hour movie.
While it is unknown if Ewan McGregor will be back in the role, it does seem highly likely as McGregor was fully on board the spinoff movie. Ewan McGregor is currently filming DC’s Birds of Prey movie as the main villain, Black Mask, so possibly the Obi-Wan Kenobi series could go into production shortly after that is finished filming.
If the rumor is legit, look for a possible announcement at the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago this April.
Disney currently has two Star Wars series in the works for their streaming service with the Jon Favreau The Mandalorian, and the Rogue One spinoff featuring Diego Luna back as Cassian Andor.
