Disney Confirms R-Rated Deadpool; Hints At More

Disney just finished with their investors conference call, and while there was no Star Wars: Episode IX title reveal, the subject of R-rated Deadpool and Marvel movies was touched upon.

Bob Iger shot down a question about Disney getting involved in gambling, but mentioned Disney would be releasing R-rated Deadpool films and hinted that other Marvel movies could be rated-R.

We do believe there is room for the Fox properties to exist without significant Disney influence over the nature of the content. Meaning that we see that there is certainly popularity amongst Marvel fans for the R-rated Deadpool films, for instance, we are going to continue in that business, and there might be room for more of that.

Bob Iger also hinted that the R-rated Deadpool films (and whatever else) might have a different brand to separate it from Disney products and the regular Marvel products.

There is nothing that we really seen in the Fox library or in the activities that Fox is engaging in today from a standards perspective that would be a concern for us as long as we are very carefully branding them and making sure we are not in any way confusing the consumer with product that would be the Disney product or more traditional Marvel product.

Another tidbit released during the conference call was that Disney is going to continue licensing out their properties for video games and not publish them in-house (Electronic Arts also confirmed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order).

The call didn’t mention anything about if Ryan Reynolds was going to continue to play Deadpool, but with confirmation Disney is continuing the films, it seems likely. Official announcements will be made once the Disney-Fox deal goes through within the next couple of months.
