Tuesday saw the Hollywood trade sites report that former Marvel Studios and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn had signed on with Warner Bros. for Suicide Squad 2.
Now the news is official as DC confirms James Gunn officially joins the DC Universe.
“It’s official that we’ve got a new member of the DC family,” Tiffany Smith confirmed in episode 20 of DC Daily. “Acclaimed writer director James Gunn has been attached to write Suicide Squad 2.”
Tiffany Smith also confirms that James Gunn will be taking a brand new take on the DC property.
“Gunn is poised to bring a completely fresh take to the franchise after the first film was written and directed by David Ayer,” Tiffany Smith said.
The initial reports also stated that James Gunn could direct Suicide Squad 2 depending on how things go.
David Ayer has also voiced his support for James Gunn on the sequel.
“I think it’s an incredibly brave and smart move by the studio. James is the right man for the job!” David Ayer tweeted.
The first Suicide Squad was released in 2016 and grossed over $746.8 million, but it happened to be loathed by the critics as it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 28%, though 60% of fans stated they liked it.
With James Gunn bringing a fresh take on the franchise, there is also speculation that it will feature an all new cast and characters.
Suicide Squad starred Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as Joker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jay Hernandez as Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
