Black Panther Loses At Golden Globes

Marvel’s hopes of nabbing an Oscar for Black Panther may be dashed as it failed to achieve an award at tonight’s Golden Globes ceremony.

Black Panther was nominated in three Golden Globe categories including Best Motion Picture, Best Score and Best Song.

The winner that beat Black Panther in the Best Motion Picture category is Bohemian Rhapsody (Rami Malek won for Best Actor as well).

The Golden Globe for Best Score went to Justin Hurwitz for First Man. 

The Best Song went to “Shallow,” for A Star Is Born.

Marvel Studios and Disney have been campaigning for Black Panther to win an Oscar heavily, as their “for your consideration” website recommends the movie in 20 categories, with over three dozen of the creators and actors also recommended.

While not directly having anything to do with Black Panther, the Oscars were involved recently in controversy when they announced a “Most Popular” category – thought to be for Black Panther – but the Academy has since rescinded the category following the backlash.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously commented on Black Panther potentially getting an Oscar:

“I would like to see the hard work and the effort and the vision and the belief of the talented filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who sat across the table from us a few years ago and said, ‘I have been wrestling with questions about my past and my heritage and I think I really want to tell a story within this movie,’ ” Feige told the LA Times. “And that he did it so unbelievably well and with so much impact … seeing that potentially being recognized is what excites me the most. I think it would be wonderful,” Feige continued. “The people behind the camera, the people on screen that acted in the movie, any of them being recognized would bring us great joy because they did tremendous work. And it’s always nice when tremendous work is recognized.”

The Oscars air Feb. 24 on ABC.
