Warner Bros. reveals a new look at the upcoming spinoff of The Conjuring, with The Nun and American Horror Storyâs Taissa Farmiga.
The movie is a prequel and takes place in the early 1950s in Romania about the origin of the evil spirit known as Valak, which was featured in The Conjuring 2.
Taissa Farmiga plays Sister Irene.
âShe had a difficult and isolating childhood,â Farmiga told EW about her character. âShe experienced these visions that set her apart from her peers and eventually led her to a life in the church.â
The article notes Sister Irene and Father Burke, played by Demian Bichir, are tasked by the Vatican to investigate a mysterious death; Farmiga reveals, âthereâs some sort of presence that shouldnât be there.â
The Conjuring 2 actress Bonnie Aarons also reprises as The Nun, with director Corin Hardy comparing her to the legendary Freddy Krueger.
âWhen I got The Nun, I called up New Line and was like, âWe have secured the actress that plays the Nun, right?âââhe said. âEven in the short space of time she was on screen [in The Conjuring 2], she owns that role in the same way that Robert Englund owns Freddy [Krueger].â
The Nun gets released September 7, 2018.
The Nun
Filmmaker James Wan, director of the record-setting horror hits âThe Conjuringâ and âThe Conjuring 2,â explores another dark corner of that universe with âThe Nun.â Directed by Corin Hardy (âThe Hallowâ), the new fright-fest is produced by Wan and by Peter Safran, who has produced all the films in âThe Conjuringâ franchise.
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the orderâs unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in âThe Conjuring 2,â as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
The Nunâ stars Oscar nominated Demian Bichir (âA Better Lifeâ) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TVâs âAmerican Horror Storyâ) as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet (âElleâ) as local villager Frenchie.
The cast also includes Charlotte Hope (TVâs âGame of Thronesâ) as the abbeyâs Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (âToni Erdmannâ) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her âConjuring 2â role as the title character.
Hardy directs âThe Nunâ from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (âItâ), story by James Wan & Gary Dauberman. Dauberman, Todd Williams and Michael Clear are the executive producers.
Joining Hardy behind the scenes are director of photography Maxime Alexandre (âThe Voices,â âAnnabelle: Creationâ), production designer Jennifer Spence (âAnnabelle: Creation,â âLights Out,â the âInsidiousâ films), editors Michel Aller (âLights Out,â âParanormal Activity: Ghost Dimensionâ) and Ken Blackwell ( âOuijaâ âFriday the 13thâ), and costume designer Sharon Gilham (TVâs âBlack Mirrorâ). The music is by Abel Korzeniowski (âNocturnal Animalsâ).
New Line Cinema presents an Atomic Monster / Safran Company production, âThe Nun.â Opening in theaters on September 7, 2018, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
