Shōgun Season 2 Begins Filming in January with Original Cast Returning

FX has confirmed that Shōgun season 2 will start production in January in Vancouver. The hit drama, which streams on FX, Hulu, and Disney+, continues to expand following its record-breaking success. Based on the novel by James Clavell, Shōgun became FX’s most-watched series and won 18 Emmy Awards.

Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis Return

Hiroyuki Sanada is back as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and will now also serve as an executive producer. Cosmo Jarvis returns as English pilot John Blackthorne and has been promoted to co-executive producer.

In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.

Part two of Shōgun is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.

New Original Storyline from Kondo and Marks

Series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks wrapped a dedicated writers’ room to shape an entirely original second chapter. While season 1 adapted Clavell’s novel, the upcoming season builds on that foundation with a new story inspired by historical events.

Kondo and Marks return as executive producers along with Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Sanada. FX Productions continues to produce the series.

Awards and Critical Acclaim

Shōgun swept award season, winning Outstanding Drama Series and making history with Sanada and Anna Sawai both winning lead acting Emmys — a first for Asian performers in those categories. The series also picked up a Golden Globe, SAG, WGA, DGA, and multiple other honors.

Production kicks off in January 2026. No premiere date has been announced yet.
