Minecraft Movie Streams on HBO Max June 20

Minecraft Movie begins streaming globally on Max starting Friday, June 20. It will air on HBO’s linear channel the following day, Saturday, June 21, at 8:00 p.m. ET. An American Sign Language (ASL) version, performed by Sophia Morales, will also be available on Max the same day.

The film has brought in over $951 million worldwide. Fans also give the flick an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Live-Action Adaptation of the Game

This is the first live-action adaptation of Minecraft, the best-selling video game in history. Directed by Jared Hess (Nacho Libre), the movie stars Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, with Jack Black as Steve—the game’s original player character.

They’re joined by Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sebastian Hansen (Lisey’s Story), and Jennifer Coolidge. The story follows a group of four who get pulled into the Overworld, a cube-based dimension where they must learn to survive and protect it from threats like Piglins and Zombies.

Production and Creative Team

Hess directed from a screenplay by Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener & Gavin James, and Chris Galletta, based on a story by Allison Schroeder and Bowman & Palmer. Producers include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Jason Momoa, Jill Messick, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Vu Bui. Executive producers are Todd Hallowell, Jay Ashenfelter, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, and Jon Spaihts.
