Sony’s El Muerto Back In Development Without Bad Bunny

Sony’s El Muerto Back In Development Without Bad Bunny

The Sony Spider-Man spinoff starring Bad Bunny, El Muerto, is back in development.

The flick was yanked from Sony’s release schedule back in June of last year during the strikes.

At the time it was said the script needed some work but due to the fact the writers were on strike, the script couldn’t finished so filming couldn’t begin. Bad Bunny’s schedule was also said to be a factor as he is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer.

In Variety‘s recent report about the three Marvel Sony movies getting released in 2024 (Madame Web, Kraven, Venom 3) , El Muerto is back in development.

“But his conflicting tour and script revisions now have the project back in development — without a star on the books,” states the report.

Update: The flick is in development without Bad Bunny.

What is El Muerto about?

Previous details about El Muerto have said the flick was originally supposed to be released Jan. 12, 2024 directed by Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón.

Actors said to have been circling the project include WWE superstar Sasha Banks, and Marvin Jones III for the role of the crime lord known as Tombstone who previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Similar to Venom, Morbius, and Kraven, in the Sony Spider-Man spinoff universe, El Muerto is said to be an anti-hero.

In the comics, El Muerto, aka Juan-Carlos Sanchez, is a super powered Mexican Luchador (wrestler) who wears a magical mask that has been passed down in his family, but Juan-Carlos is reluctant and too scared to take part in the ritual involving having to fight El Dorado to prove his worth and courage for the mask.

So El Dorado demands the life of Juan-Carlos, but Juan Carlos’ father intervenes only to get killed by El Dorado who in turn, due to his father’s bravery, gives Juan-Carlos an extra ten years to train. Long story short, Juan-Carlos eventually challenges Spider-Man to a wrestling match (seriously) where the two wrestle but Spider-Man accidentally sticks Juan-Carlos with a stinger that knocks Juan Carlos out.

At the hospital, El Dorado shows up and wants Juan-Carlos dead because Juan-Carlos didn’t successfully unmask Spider-Man, which leads to a battle between Spidey and El Dorado with Juan-Carlos added into the mix.
