James Gunn Confirms ‘Clayface’ Is DCU, Said To Be Lower Budget Horror Movie

More details come out about DC’s Clayface movie that is in development as the flick is said to be a lower budget horror movie and James Gunn confirms it is set in the DCU.

Following the reports how Clayface is moving forward and has a release date, THR adds that “the idea is to make [Clayface] a horror movie in the $40 million range” adding “in another effort to show the diversity of the DC Studios slate.”

Writer is a big fan of Batman: The Animated Series

It’s known that Mike Flanagan pitched Clayface years ago as a “horror/thriller/tragedy,” and he is is writing the script. Flanagan’s background is horror including Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep, Haunting of Hill House, and more. It’s learned the writer/director is a big fan of the ’90s Batman animated series.

THR says: “Fun fact: Flanagan loves, loves, loves the Clayface episodes from the classic Batman: The Animated Series.”

Batman: The Animated Series actually changed Clayface (Matt Hagen) into the shape-changing monster most fans know, and with James Gunn confirming the news with a similar image from the comics, it seems the movie will indeed use the blob-like version. The original version in the comics is Basil Karlo, a washed-up actor who turned to crime using the persona from one of his horror films.

Is Clayface DCU, Reeves Verse or standalone?

It’s also been rumored the Clayface movie is a part of the Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson Batman universe, as Reeves is also producing. Gunn recently confirmed it’s set in the DCU.

“Exciting news out of @DCOfficial Studios today as #Clayface, a DCU story from a script by Mike Flanagan, has been OFFICIALLY greenlit,” tweeted Gunn.

Clayface gets released on Sept. 11, 2026, which follows Supergirl on June 26, 2026 and Superman on July 11, 2025.
