Fantastic Four: Julia Garner Assumes Her Silver Surfer Will Be Shiny

Julia Garner talks about playing the Silver Surfer in the upcoming Marvel Studios Fantastic Four movie.

While doing press for Wolf Man, Garner spoke with EW and offered up she assumes her version of the Silver Surfer will look shiny:

“I can’t really speak a lot about that project. All I can just say is that I’m very lucky to have a part in that project, and the Fantastic Four are fantastic. They are so amazing in this. I’m very excited for people to see them. I’m assuming that this Silver Surfer is gonna be really shiny like in the other previous ones and the comic books. So, yeah, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Silver Surfer and Defenders From Marvel Comics In December

Why the change?

The Silver Surfer is actually a male character in the comics, Norrin Radd, who appeared in the 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer movie and the 1998 animated series. We can guess that similar to Marvel going woke following Avengers: Endgame, some MCU producer thought it was a good idea to change the Silver Surfer to a female character for whatever reason. Recall the MCU, for some reason, changed Taskmaster to a female in Black Widow, exactly as I said would happen.

Also, it seems kind of odd that Garner assumes her version will be shiny, as she should probably know that, but maybe she is simply playing coy.

Rumors have also offered the Fantastic Four movie will be all about Sue Storm and that Sue Storm feels like Reed Richards has been holding her back. Last summer, my Marvel insiders filled me in that things may have changed with the flick. Spoilers here. Worth a note, is that the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Rivals game aren’t woke at all.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps gets released on July 25, 2025 directed by Matt Shakman and stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

A recent synopsis also mentions both Silver Surfer and Galactus:

Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet.

Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.
