Zach Cregger Begins Filming Resident Evil Reboot in Prague

Filming has kicked off in Prague on Weapons director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot, set for release in September 2026. Production will use city streets and Barrandov Studios as primary locations.

Last week, Cregger made his first public appearance in the Czech capital, surprising fans at Edison Filmhub during a screening of The Vanishing Hour as part of the Kinomixer Night series, organized with the Future Gate festival.

A Longtime Fan of the Games

While promoting Weapons, Cregger says he’s been a devoted Resident Evil player for years, especially Resident Evil 4, which he’s beaten multiple times.

“I love those games,” he told the Sam Brown University YouTuber Channel. “My favorite thing about them is that moment in every game where you’re standing at the mouth of a dark passage, you know something horrible is going to happen, you have one shotgun shell left, and no choice but to move forward.”

That sense of dread became the foundation for his film’s story.

A Fresh Story in Familiar Territory

While the movie won’t adapt any specific game plot, Cregger says it will exist in the Resident Evil universe and capture the tone and tension of the series.

“It’s not adapting any of the game plots, but it exists in that same territory,” he explained.

Speaking at CinemaCon, Cregger revealed the film will follow a single character “from point A to point B” as they “descend deeper into hell,” aiming for a stripped-down, character-driven approach.

Honoring the Source Material

In an interview with Variety, Cregger emphasized that the film will honor the games’ pacing and atmosphere.

“The pacing of those games is so unique and effective, and just being locked in with one character moving from point A to point B, knowing you’re going to pass through this gauntlet of terror, and you’ve got to be methodical and thoughtful about it,” he said. “That’s cool. That’s cinematic. So I want to tell the story in the world of the games that honors the lore of the games, but it’s a new story.”
