Jason Momoa again sheds doubt on continuing to play Aquaman but would love to play Lobo, as James Gunn is rebooting things with the new DCU.
Following his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he teased the end of Aquaman and continuing as another character, Momoa went so far as to say the future of Aquaman is not looking good in a new interview.
Aquaman future not looking too good
“But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good,’” Momoa admitted to ETOnline.
Momoa did say that when he came up with the story for the sequel he had every intention to continue the franchise.
“Yeah, I think I had all intentions just because I love this character and been playing it for a long time. I can see it where I want it to go, even in the next ten years,” he said. “So there is a lot of cool things they can do and I do enjoy the role and the world.”
He added, “It just comes down to if people love it… It comes down to the fans, which is really cool. If the fans love it, then so be it.”
James Gunn rebooting with the DCU
The first Aquaman movie is the highest-grossing DC movie of all time bringing in over $1.15 billion back in 2018 and opening to over $100 million for the long Christmas weekend; however, Aquaman 2 is projected to go come nowhere near those numbers. Again, James Gunn is rebooting the DC films universe, which is likely impacting how fans approach Aquaman 2.
“I know James Gunn is definitely a fan. [Aquaman producer] Peter Safran, I’m obviously close to. If there is a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it… This is my home. Warner and DC is definitely my home. So, that’s all I’ll say,” he said with a smile.
How about playing Lobo?
Rumors offer Jason Momoa will be back in the Gunn Verse as Lobo, as Momoa himself has seemingly teased he is continuing with Gunn and Safran’s new DCU.
“I was a big Lobo fan growing up,” said Momoa, “So I have every comic. That would be really cool. That would be cool.”
Momoa is also asked if it would be weird if he played another character in the DCU but then another actor came in to play Aquaman.
“I have different ideas if they did do that,” he said. “I think there are a lot of cool ideas they can run with.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom opens Dec. 22 directed by James Wan also starring Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
