Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Says It’s About Time a Woman Shaped Star Wars

Despite the president of Lucasfilm being a woman, new Star Wars director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy says it’s about time a woman shaped Star Wars.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing the new Rey movie starring Daisy Ridley that was first announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April. The film is said to be set after the events of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker as Rey builds a new Jedi Order.

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special,” Obaid-Chinoy told CNN. “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

At least three Star Wars movies on the way

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy probably means the first woman Star Wars movie director as again, Kathleen Kennedy has been at the helm of Star Wars since Disney bought Lucasfilm nearly 12 years ago.

There is also the fact that Deborah Chow directed all the episodes of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and female directors have directed episodes of The Mandalorian, Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. The Acolyte has Leslye Headland as the director and showrunner as well.

Of course, George Lucas’ wife, Marica Lucas, also edited the original trilogy (who slammed the Disney SW movies).

The Rey movie doesn’t have a release date. Star Wars Celebration Europe in April also saw the announcements for the Dave Filoni movie, the James Mangold movie, and Taika Waititi has also been working on a flick for the past three years. It’s also been claimed The Mandalorian Season 4 will instead become a movie instead of another season on Disney+.

None of the films have release dates but Disney has set untitled release dates for three Star Wars movies: May 22, 2026, December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027.
