Indiana Jones: Cannes Audience Bored With Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Yikes! Disney and Kathleen Kennedy may have yet another bomb on their hands with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Is Bob Iger ever going to learn??

Lucasfilm and Kennedy debuted Indiana Jones 5 – the last for Harrison Ford – Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival in France where it is reported the audience reaction while watching the film is less than stellar, particularly with Phoebe Waller-Bridge who plays Indy’s god-daughter.

Variety tweeted out that the French audience was bored as they watched and didn’t react much to the flick.

“The elaborate action scenes and witty one-liners delivered by Phoebe Waller-Bridge in’ Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ mostly received a muted response inside the theater. Audience members could be heard whispering out of boredom in French,” states the tweet.

Audience cheers for Harrison Ford not the movie

Variety further notes that Disney spared no expense as Harrison Ford was flown in for the long goodbye, but says: “Cannes mustered a muted standing ovation for Indy’s latest adventure. Yes, the applause lasted for five minutes, but by Cannes standards, that’s more of a polite formality.”

Ford also addressed the audience before the movie started, where it’s said, “Indeed, the standing ovations for Ford were louder before the movie played.”

The article continues, “The film’s elaborate action scenes and witty one-liners delivered by Waller-Bridge received a less-than-rapturous response inside the theater. During parts of the 142-minute film, audience members could be heard whispering out of boredom in French.”

The first batch of reviews have also hit Rotten Tomatoes and they are more of the same as the current Rotten Tomatoes Score is only 44%.

Disney and Kathleen Kennedy chose to debut James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at Cannes in order to promote the movie in the hopes it would be a big success, but now we see they probably should have dialed things back.

What is also interesting is the reaction the flick is getting from reviewers and the trades as a Hollywood insider offers Kathleen Kennedy’s days are finally over following the release of Indy 5. And it’s about damn time.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny officially opens June 30.
