Thunderbolts – New Avengers Posts Fourth-Lowest Friday Box Office In MCU History

We get an early update about the second Friday box office for Marvel’s Thunderbolts / New Avengers, and it’s coming in as the fourth-lowest in MCU history, which lines up with the movie’s performance all week and for its opening weekend.

Its Friday is only performing better than Captain America: Brave New World, The Marvels, and Quantumania.

Update: Possibly signaling Disney has lost faith in Thunderbolts, it is being reported that Disney is re-releasing Snow White this weekend in over 1200 theaters.

What is the Friday box office?

Via Deadline, the site reports the Thunderbolts / New Avengers Friday box office is $9 million.

That’s better than the second Friday box offices of Captain America: Brave New World ($7,282,666), The Marvels ($2,756,659), and Quantumania ($8,329,121).

However, it’s lower than Shang-Chi‘s second Friday box office of $9,628,206, which when adjusted for inflation actually comes in at $11,363,216 in today’s dollars.

Likewise, it’s lower than Eternals ($7,839,828, or $9.21M in today’s dollars) and Black Widow ($8M, or $9.44M in today’s dollars).

It’s also lower than 2015’s Ant-Man ($7,252,683, or $9.78M in today’s dollars).

What about the second weekend estimates?

Deadline might be spinning things on the high side, as the site estimates that Thunderbolts / New Avengers will have a second weekend gross of $35M, which would be a 53% drop from its opening weekend of $74.3M.

However, for the record, Shang-Chi‘s second Friday brought in $9,628,206 for a $34.7M second weekend gross (not even counting inflation). If Thunderbolts performs similarly, it’s more like around a $32M weekend, a 55.96% drop.

Update: The second weekend underperformed with $33.1M.

Following Friday, the second weekend box office will depend on whether folks come out Saturday and Sunday for the movie. There is no competition, so the estimates could go either way, up or down. It’s not a bad movie at all, not perfect either, but there are a lot of cool moments.

As I previously went over for Thursday’s numbers, following this weekend, Thunderbolts / New Avengers will face some competition against Final Destination: Bloodlines, followed by getting wiped out by Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible.

Thunderbolts / New Avengers has around a $300 million budget when everything is factored in, so as it’s performing similarly to Captain America: Brave New World with a similar budget and Disney just officially confirmed Cap 4 is a big bust, it’s not looking too good for New Avengers in the MCU.

As of Thursday, the Thunderbolts / New Avengers box office is at $95,354,195 domestic, $86,236,966 foreign, and $181,591,161 worldwide.

Here are MCU second weekend grosses of comparable movies:

  • Captain America: Brave New World: $28,170,093
  • The Marvels: $10,120,589
  • Quantumania: $31,964,803
  • Black Widow: $25,847,496 (w/ inflation: $30,505,234.43)
  • Shang-Chi: $34,701,070 (w/ inflation: $40,954,229.19)
  • Eternals: $26,850,128 (w/ inflation: $31,688,541.48)
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: $29,097,859 (w/ inflation: $37,057,773.02)
  • Ant-Man: $24,909,332 (w/ inflation: $33,609,316.90)
