Death Stranding Animated Series Heads to Disney+ in 2027

Death Stranding is expanding again, and this time it’s heading to Disney+. Hideo Kojima stepped on stage at the Disney+ Originals Preview to confirm Death Stranding Isolations (working title), a new hand-drawn animated series set to stream in 2027. The project marks Kojima Productions’ first partnership with a global streaming platform and brings the franchise to an audience beyond the PlayStation base.

Kojima and Sano Announce the Series

Kojima appeared with director Takayuki Sano at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort to share the announcement with a packed crowd. The team also showed new concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, known for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. Sano’s studio, E&H Production, is handling the animation.

Kojima said the move to Disney+ came after the company approached him while working together on the 2023 documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. He noted that expanding Death Stranding into animation allows him to explore ideas that fit the medium and reach viewers who may never play the games.

A New Story in the Death Stranding Universe

Death Stranding Isolations takes place within the world of the games but tells its own original story. The series follows a young man and woman on a new path across a fractured America. The animation uses a traditional hand-drawn 2D style, with top artists from E&H Production working on the project.

The story explores isolation, connection, and survival as new characters face threats tied to the dead colliding with the living. While Sam Bridges’ mission continues elsewhere, the series introduces:

  • An old man seeking salvation outside of Sam’s network
  • A female warrior shaping her own violent vision
  • A boy with a deep grudge
  • A girl choosing solitude

Their paths cross as the world sits on the brink once again.

How the Franchise Continues to Grow

The original Death Stranding game launched in 2019 and has reached more than 20 million players. It combined cinematic ambition with a focus on human connection, becoming one of Kojima’s signature works. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, arrived on PlayStation 5 in June 2025.

The franchise is also moving into film with an adaptation in development at A24.
