Disney’s latest financial filings make one thing undeniable: Deadpool & Wolverine is easily the company’s biggest modern box office win.
The quarter-over-quarter drop in Entertainment earnings – following the release of Fantastic Four – is almost entirely due to the fact that this year had no equivalent blockbuster. Last year’s results were inflated by two major drivers — Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine — and Disney’s own numbers repeatedly point to those films as the reason the prior year looked so strong.
Yet despite the financial proof that Deadpool & Wolverine delivered in a way nothing else has, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have made no announcements tied to the film’s success. There has been no sequel reveal, no spin-off, and no roadmap built around what is clearly Marvel’s most reliable and bankable property.
No Clear Direction From Marvel Studios
The silence is baffling. Kevin Feige hasn’t confirmed a single direct follow-up to Deadpool & Wolverine, even though the film revived interest in the MCU during one of its most uncertain periods. The only cast confirmation for Avengers: Doomsday so far is Channing Tatum, who is finally stepping into the Gambit role he nearly played a decade ago. Beyond that, there is no clear Deadpool-related presence in the MCU’s next major chapter.
This lack of movement stands out because the MCU is in a transitional phase, with Marvel’s release slate slowing dramatically and the next theatrical Marvel film not arriving until December 2026.
Ryan Reynolds Is Developing Follow-Ups on His Own
While Marvel remains publicly quiet, Ryan Reynolds hasn’t been. Behind the scenes, he has pushed ideas aggressively — including another attempt to resurrect Wesley Snipes as Blade. Reynolds has also been developing concepts for a Deadpool & Wolverine follow-up essentially on his own, shaping pitches and ideas while waiting for a greenlight that still hasn’t materialized.
Reynolds’ interest is clear, Snipes is interested, the fans are interested, and Disney’s financials prove the demand is there. But Feige and Marvel has made no announcements, even as it struggles to find projects with the brand power Deadpool & Wolverine just demonstrated.
Feige’s Silence Raises More Questions Than Answers
With Disney highlighting the film’s impact in official filings, the lack of movement from Marvel Studios is becoming harder to ignore. The company is clearly aware of how important Deadpool & Wolverine was to its fiscal year. Yet Marvel hasn’t built on that momentum.
Whether this is due to internal restructuring, shifting MCU priorities, or simply a wait-and-see approach to Avengers: Doomsday, the disconnect between the film’s success and Marvel’s silence is becoming the story itself.
