Jason Momoa To Star In ‘Helldivers’ Movie As Sony Sets Fall 2027 Release

Sony has officially landed its leading man for Helldivers, as Jason Momoa is set to star in the feature adaptation of the hit PlayStation video game.

The film is being directed by Justin Lin and will hit theaters on November 10, 2027. PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures are behind the project, based on the franchise developed by Arrowhead Game Studios.

Momoa joins what is shaping up to be a major franchise play for Sony as it continues to expand its video game properties to the big screen.

A Massive Gaming Franchise Heads To Theaters

The original Helldivers launched in 2015, but it was Helldivers 2 that exploded in popularity. The sequel sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in its first four months following its 2024 release. The game has since expanded to Xbox and continues to perform strongly.

The story centers on an elite unit of soldiers known as Helldivers who battle alien threats attempting to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth, which includes the Automatons, the Terminids, and the Illuminates. The most recent update to the game brought back the Cyborgs from the original.

Hutch Parker is producing alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, with Lin also producing through Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Sony’s Growing Video Game Track Record

Sony and PlayStation Productions have already found box office success adapting gaming properties.

Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, earned $407 million globally and ranks among the top 10 highest-grossing video game adaptations worldwide.

Sony is also behind Peacock’s Twisted Metal and HBO’s award-winning The Last of Us.

At the moment, Helldivers is the only major wide studio release set for November 10, 2027.

Momoa’s Packed Franchise Schedule

Momoa continues to stack major franchise roles.

He was recently revealed to be playing intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which hits theaters June 26. He currently stars opposite Dave Bautista in Amazon MGM Studios’ The Wrecking Crew on Prime Video.

On May 1, he appears alongside Ryan Reynolds in the Warner Bros./Legendary hybrid animated film Animal Friends. He’s also set to portray Blanka in Legendary/Paramount’s Street Fighter on October 16 and will return as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three on December 18.

Momoa previously played Aquaman in Warner Bros.’ DC films and portrayed Dante in Fast X, which Justin Lin wrote and produced. Last year, he starred in the near $1 billion-grossing A Minecraft Movie, widely viewed as a film that helped reignite the global box office in 2025. The sequel is also set for 2027.

He’s also known for playing Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones and most recently starred in and co-created Apple TV+’s limited series Chief of War.

With Momoa attached, Sony clearly wants Helldivers to launch as a full-scale action franchise — now the question is whether it captures the chaotic, satirical tone that made the game a breakout hit.
