Mark Hamill Praises Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni: 'They Get Star Wars'

Mark Hamill is giving credit where it’s due, pointing out that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni truly understand Star Wars.

In a new interview with THR, Hamill explained why he returned as Luke Skywalker with The Mandalorian (in The Book of Boba Fett) and emphasized that Favreau and Filoni are carrying forward George Lucas’ spirit in a way he didn’t always see in the sequels.

Why Hamill Came Back in The Mandalorian

Hamill said that Luke’s story always felt incomplete:

“The reason I did Mandalorian was that Luke had a beginning and an end. There was no middle. It was like making a trilogy about James Bond as a young boy… and then you jump to the end. You never got to see Luke as a Master Jedi at the peak of his powers.”

Hamill added that Luke was the most idealistic character in the saga, someone who faced adversity head-on. Getting the chance to revisit Luke in his prime was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

Hamill on Favreau and Filoni

Hamill didn’t hold back his praise:

“I think Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, boy, do they get Star Wars. They get it. They’re speaking the same language that George did in a way that I questioned in the sequels.”

The comment highlights Hamill’s long-running concerns with how Luke was portrayed in the Disney sequel trilogy, compared to his more hopeful, heroic role in The Mandalorian.
