Following Brave New World, Anthony Mackie will be suiting up as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, where he will come face to face with Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the MCU not as Tony Stark, but as Doctor Doom.
Recently, Mackie teased that they are getting the band back together for Avengers: Doomsday and that he’s excited to “give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”
Sam is a regular guy
While promoting the upcoming release of Peacock’s Twisted Metal Season 2, Mackie is asked by Jake’s Take on YouTube what Sam’s reaction will be to seeing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
Mackie says:
That’s what I’m excited about. I feel like the one thing about Sam Wilson that I love so much is, he’s a regular guy. There’s no serum, there’s no add-ons, so his reaction is literally the audience’s reaction. So I don’t know if he’s going to get excited, I don’t know if he’s going to be afraid, I don’t know if he’s going to be confused—but I think, you know, with the Russos, they’re so smart, and you know we usually play things many different ways, so I’m sure they’ll pick the one that works best.
That might not be the only reaction fans get to see from Mackie, as rumors offer Chris Evans will be returning in Avengers: Doomsday. The last time Mackie saw Cap was in Avengers: Endgame when Old Man Cap gave Sam the shield. Rumors also offer Hayley Atwell will be back, who played Peggy Carter. It’s speculated that Evans and Atwell will be playing their characters from the past, or since Robert Downey Jr. is playing a new character, maybe Evans and Atwell are playing new characters.

Robert Downey Jr. also teased that additional actors and announcements could be coming soon.

Avengers: Doomsday gets released on May 1, 2026. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing. Stephen McFeely is writing the script.
Plot
The official plot hasn’t been released. A recently leaked set video offers a potential big clue, which seems to line up with the Secret Wars comics involving Doctor Doom and Battleworld.
