James Gunn’s Lanterns Series Sounds Bizarre: 'Very Adult and Weird'

With the DCU Lanterns series now in production, a new description offers the series is “very adult and weird.”

The info comes via scooper Daniel RPK via X who apparently didn’t go into details.

How could Lanterns be adult and weird?

The news that the DCU Lanterns series could be adult and weird shouldn’t come as a surprise, as it fits exactly with James Gunn’s approach to his Creature Commandos animated series which soft-launched the DCU. The Lanterns series also happens to be from Damon Lindelof and Tom King (red flags there, too).

The official description offers the series is set on Earth taking place in the Heartland of America where Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigate a murder:

The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Lanterns sounds woke

However, different descriptions have offered things like the older Hal Jordan (59-year-old Kyle Chandler) isn’t thrilled to be working with the younger John Stewart (30-year-old Aaron Pierre). Similar to what Gunn did with Creature Commandos, rumored plot details for Lanterns have offered the series will be injecting agenda-based content into the show.

A reported casting call revealed that the town the Lanterns investigate is full of racists. It’s said that an older Indian woman has a racist husband and is surrounded by racists and that the younger John Stewart falls in love with her, who sounds like the only Black person in the entire town. The potential plot details seem to have been corroborated by the casting of 52-year-old Indian actress Poorna Jagannathan.

The rest of the cast includes 49-year-old Kelly MacDonald playing Sheriff Kerry (girl power), 60-year-old Garret Dillahunt as the racist white dude husband, William Macon, described as a “modern cowboy” as well as “a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade.”

Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern Slammed as a ‘Humiliation’ by Former DC Artist Who Drew Guy Gardner

61-year-old Ulrich Thomsen also plays Sinestro, and we can also add that Nathan Fillion looks very weird as Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman movie.

Release info

Lanterns doesn’t have a release date as of yet. Chris Mundy is the showrunner.
