Marvel has released The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer, but unfortunately, just like everything released in the MCU over the past six years, it’s one step forward and two steps back. Now, where does that get you?
My reaction
As I have been going over on Facebook and Twitter, my reaction to The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer is that it’s pretty mid. It feels more like an MCU Disney+ show than something that’s supposed to be a big event theatrical summer release.
I really like the ’60s futuristic vibe. I love the music score, which is my favorite thing of the trailer. However, what I am not sold on is the cast.
The Thing’s voice does not fit at all
Question: Why is Ebon Moss-Bachrach using his normal voice as The Thing? It sounds horrible. It doesn’t fit AT ALL.
The Thing has had a deeper voice since the 1967 cartoon. Why change it? He’s a frickin’ rock. My first impression was that I thought Seth Rogen was voicing The Thing. Guessing he was too expensive. They need to fix The Thing’s voice. What the frig is he going to sound like when(if?) he says, “IT’S CLOBBERIN’ TIME!” I’m also mixed on the CGI. He kinda looks too cartoonish.
Girl boss
Next is Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm. I’m getting big-time girl boss vibes from her in the trailer (worked out for The Marvels). Her voice also happens to be deeper than The Thing’s (lol) and she sounds like she smokes five packs a day. Vanessa Kirby also looks like she towers over everyone, including The Thing. What’s going on? I hope the rumors aren’t right about Sue feeling as if Reed has been holding her back her entire life. As I tweeted, I wouldn’t doubt if it’s Reed who feels as if Sue has been holding him back his entire life! WTF.
Not much to go on, yet
Joseph Quinn‘s Johnny Storm, there’s really not much to go on. His Human Torch scenes look decent enough. The dye job on his hair (and eyebrows?) doesn’t look all that good though. They probably should just stuck with his normal hair color or gave it highlights.
We had John Krasinski
Regarding Pedro Pascal, he’s “Pedro Pascal” in everything he does. We had John Krasinski. We had f’n John Krasinski. But we can’t have John Krasinski. Makes no sense. Unless of course, Krasinski is too expensive, too. Or maybe Krasinski read the script (six writers???) and thought better of it. Pascal also likes to play simple roles as of late, so again, hopefully, the rumors aren’t true.
Big G is cool
Seeing Galactus was cool. While admittedly he looks kinda goofy, I think Galactus will fit in perfect with the ’60s alternate Earth vibe. After that? I’m not so sure. I recently re-watched Iron Man and couldn’t help but think, “WTF happened to the MCU?”
Fantastic Four: The First Steps gets released on July 25, 2025.
