Toy Story 5 Not About The Disney Money Says Tim Allen: 'Brilliant Script'

Tim Allen offers an update about Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and says it’s not about the money but about the story. The actor returns to voice Buzz along with Tom Hanks as Woody following Lightyear bombing hard back in 2022. Toy Story 5 is expected to be released on June 19, 2026.

“Very clever story”

Recently while speaking with Collider, Allen confirmed he just finished his first five hour voice recording session and had good things to say about the fifth installment:

“It’s a very, very clever story. Do you wanna do five of these? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.

“Really good story”

Tim Allen continues by praising Toy Story 5 even more with mention the film has a good story:

It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”

What is Toy Story 5 about?

The official description for Toy Story 5 teases that Buzzy, Woody and the gang have to take on a team of new tech toys:

“This time around it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs get exponentially harder when they go head to head with this all new threat to playtime.”

What happened with Lightyear?

Lightyear was the Toy Story prequel film that featured Chris Evans as Buzz and not Tim Allen. The film only made $226M at the box office and was not well-received by both the critics and the fans (74% RT Score / 84% fan score).

“This is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies,” Allen said back in 2022. “The short answer is I’ve stayed out of this ’cause it has nothing to do [with his character].”

Tim Allen’s friend, Patricia Heaton, also previously blasted Disney for not using him.

“Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal Tim Allen. Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns. Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?” she tweeted in 2022.
