'Skeleton Crew' First Two-Episode Review: Great Start

Lucasfilm premiered its latest Star Was series this past week on Disney+ with Skeleton Crew which comes from Jon Watts, the director behind Marvel’s billion-dollar Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland.

The series follows the release of The Acolyte, which is a pitiful show, so everyone seems on edge regarding the latest Star Wars show. It should be said rightfully so as it’s no secret Kathleen Kennedy has destroyed Star Wars.

The good news, at least for the first two episodes, is that Skeleton Crew is done really well. They hook you in. There’s mystery, action, and intrigue. The special effects are top-notch. They leave you wanting for more. That’s a success.

Sure it’s similar to Goonies, and I swear I even heard some of the Goonies music used, but that’s not a bad thing. I don’t feel as if Skeleton Crew is ripping off from The Goonies — it’s inspired by it. Goonies came out 40 years ago (holy!).

The story follows a group of young kids who discover a starship. When they accidentally turn it on, they are jettisoned out into space where they encounter the lowest scum in the galaxy far, far away. They learn their home planet may not be what it seems. They might have even met a Jedi. How do they get home?

I like the story so far. I’ve seen complaints that the children’s home planet is too similar to Earth. That is one of my complaints, too. What is confusing is how they revealed that the kids haven’t seen stars before? Yet they know what a starship is, they know about Jedi and such?

Apparently, it seems as if everyone on the planet has been secluded for whatever reason as they have been told there is a “great barrier.” My initial thinking was that the people on the planet have been tricked into thinking they are the only ones that exist — that the entire world of “Star Wars” exists only on their planet. But it seems that theory doesn’t seem to sync up?

I was also impressed by the child acting. They felt like they had been friends and had known each other for years. No complaints there. SM 33 also comes off as a fan-favorite character.

The Verdict

The first two episodes of Skeleton Crew are a really fun ride. I also like how it’s not dumbed-down or made goofy because it centers around children. Everyone can enjoy it.

I give the first two episodes a solid 8/10 rating. Hope they don’t screw it up.
