The new Daisy Ridley action movie, Cleaner, which also stars Clive Owen, gets picked up for distribution and has an official release date.
Quiver Distribution announced that it has acquired North American rights to the Anton and Qwerty Films production Cleaner, directed by Martin Campbell, who is known for two James Bond movies, Casino Royale and GoldenEye.
Cleaner, described as an adrenaline-charged action-thriller, will be released on February 21, 2025.
What is Cleaner about?
The official synopsis offers:
Cleaner is set in present-day London. A group of radical activists, led by Clive Owen, take over an energy company’s annual gala, seizing 300 hostages in order to expose the corruption of the hosts. Their just cause is hijacked by an extremist within their ranks, who is ready to murder everyone in the building to send his anarchic message to the world. It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, played by Daisy Ridley, suspended 50 storeys up on the outside of the building, to save those trapped inside.
“This film is such an intense ride”
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Martin Campbell and the Anton team to bring Cleaner to audiences in North America,” said Quiver Distribution Co-Presidents Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman. “This film is such an intense ride featuring some of the most vigorous action sequences we have seen in years.”
Martin Campbell said, “Cleaner is a nail-biting thriller, unique and original in both its characters and its setting. Much of the film takes place on the side of One Canada Square – hundreds of feet up in the air – and I want the audience to be up there with Joey in a stomach churning, vertiginous experience.”
“The action is brutal”
Daisy Ridley, who of course is known for Star Wars, previously talked about Cleaner at the SXSW.
“I thought [Young Woman and the Sea] was the toughest thing on my body I had done, and then I did an action movie with the amazing Martin Campbell, which is the movie I did before Christmas and I was like, ‘Ow. Everything hurts,'” she said.
Ridley continued, “It’s fun in a Martin Campbell way. I play a window cleaner who is ex-army, knows how to use a gun. All of the useful things in an action film. I’m outside the building when a team of eco-activists storm the building, and I have to fight my way in, in tandem with the police outside, and try to find my brother, and try and save the people who have been taken hostage.”
She added, “It’s very exciting. The action is brutal. I was rewatching all of Martin’s films as we went, and what a filmmaker. Amazing performances, always a lot of humor, and amazing action set pieces. So, I felt like all of the action is what people think of with Martin oftentimes but also, emotionally, it was wonderful working with him. Such a taskmaster. Many, many, many, many takes. One of his notes was, ‘Didn’t feel it that time. Try again.’ One of the things he said to an actor was, ‘Fake!’ literally. It was amazing to work with someone who was so laser-focused on condition and togetherness, in amongst all of this fun action. Wonderful.”
Daisy Ridley has also recently signed on with Martin Campbell on a second action movie with Dedication.
