Jon Watts makes it official that he won’t be returning to Marvel to direct Spider-Man 4.
The director helmed all three Spidey films in the MCU starring Tom Holland which made billions of dollars.
It has also been reported he passed on directing Fantastic Four for Marvel and instead, Watts did a Star Wars series at Lucasfilm with The Skeleton Crew.
What did Jon Watts say?
While talking with Collider, Jon Watts offered up on advice to the next director of Spider-Man 4 – meaning it’s not him – on how to make Spidey look good.
“I have a very practical bit of Spider-Man advice, and I think every Spider-Man director goes through it. It doesn’t look good when someone is just swinging on a rope,” he said. “You think you’re gonna go in there, you’re like, ‘we’re gonna do it all practical. We’re gonna get a stuntman. We’re gonna be swinging around.'”
Watts continued, “It’s boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don’t waste your time. That’s my advice to the next Spider-Man director.”
What is going on with Spider-Man 4?
Nothing official has been announced by either Marvel Studios or Sony, though rumors offer Sony wants to get the fourth flick in production ASAP.
It’s also reported that Kevin Feige is deciding if Spider-Man 4 should be another Multiverse movie or more street-level.
No release date has also been announced, and likewise, no new director.
Tom Holland has recently said on more than one occasion he wants to do Spidey justice and revealed he is actually involved with the development of the fourth film.
“We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect,” he said last month. “The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing.”
Holland added, “This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me. Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things.”
