Doctor Who: Christopher Eccleston Wants Russell T Davies Fired

Christopher Eccleston wants Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies fired, which he says is the only way he will ever come back to the show.

The actor debuted as the Ninth Doctor in 2005 as part of the new series; however, he only lasted one season.

While attending the UK’s For The Love Of Sci-Fi 2023 convention, he appeared at a panel with Billie Piper and was asked, “What would have to happen for that to become a reality?”

It’s known Christopher Eccleston didn’t part ways with Doctor Who on amicable terms.

“Sack Russell T Davies. Sack Jane Tranter. Sack Phil Collinson. Sack Julie Gardner. And I’ll come back,” he answered. “So can you arrange that?”

Blacklisted

He also filled in The Guardian back in 2018 that he was blacklisted and forced to move to America to get work:

“What happened around Doctor Who almost destroyed my career…I gave them a hit show and I left with dignity and then they put me on a blacklist. I was carrying my own insecurities as it was something I had never done before and then I was abandoned, vilified in the tabloid press and blacklisted. I was told by my agent at the time: ‘The BBC regime is against you. You’re going to have to get out of the country and wait for regime change.’ So I went away to America and I kept on working because that’s what my parents instilled in me. My dad always said to me: ‘I don’t care what you do – sweeping the floor or whatever you’re doing – just do the best job you can.’ I know it’s cliched and northern and all that bollocks, but it applies.”

He also told the Radio Times back then:

“My relationship with my three immediate superiors – the showrunner, the producer and co-producer – broke down irreparably during the first block of filming and it never recovered. They lost trust in me, and I lost faith and trust and belief in them.

Loves Doctor Who

At the Love Of Sci-Fi 2023 convention, Christopher Eccleston also added he has no ill will regarding playing the Timelord as he was asked, “Did you find it hard to be associated with the character?”

“Not at all, I love being associated, just don’t like being associated with those people and the politics that went on in the first series. The first series was a mess, and it wasn’t to do with me or Billie [Piper], it was to do with the people who were supposed to make it, and it was a mess,” he said.

Russell T Davies is back as showrunner on Doctor Who which sees the return of David Tennant and the Fifteenth Timelord played by Ncuti Gatwa.
